South Sudanese women labour in a rock quarry on the outskirts of Juba, South Sudan on Thursday, November 3nd, 2011.  The majority of quarry workers, who painstakingly manufacture gravel by smashing up bits of granite with improvised hammers, are women.  Most workers earn approximately 1 USD per day...Following decades of civil war, South Sudan became the world's newest country when it attained formal independence from The Sudan on July 9, 2011.  The fledgling nation faces numerous challenges, including an 85-95% illiteracy rate, ethnic and tribal conflicts and continued disputes with northern Sudan.
